how it works

Afridge or freezer works in the way that it pumps gas refrigerant at high pressure levels through componets and reach the end point when its cold to absorb the warm air and maintains temperatures and this is achieved through its componets assembled together.

COMPRESSOR

This is the heart of the fridge that stores and pumps refrigerant(gas) the now approved refrigerant used in domestic fridge freezers is R600a. the compressor is made of piston motors that pump the gas at high pressure and it uses oil to lubricate its system, the compressor is controlled by relay switch thermostart and sometimes capacitors.they varry in capacity and displacement according to the temperatures to be achieved.

CONDENSOR

This is the part of the fridge where refrigerant is received and high temperatures due to high pressures from the compressor and it condenses the refrigerant by dispating heating in the ambient hence introducing atemperature diffrence of -10 degrees of the intial temperatures, the condesor is designed with materials that dispate heat and are calculated length in the way that by the time the gas leaves the condensor its condersated and its at absolue liquid through the filter dryer.

FILTER DRYER

In the filter dryer the ref gas is receievd as liquid and from here the dryer filters the refrigerant in the liquid state to remove any fallen objects caused by tera and ware or to trap any gas molecules that might have escaped condersation from the dryer. the dryer is made of two filters, the main filter that connects to the condensor and the fine filer made of thin mess connecting to the capilary and the silk gel to trap moisture before it enters the capilary which may cause system blockage.

CAPILARY

This is atube made of mostly copper and its made with a smalldiamention so as to control the amount of refrigerant/gas that reaches the evapourator at a time depending on the temperatures to be achieved, this s designed in a way that it limits flow of gas and its always long with calculated length and diamenstion from here gas reaches the evapourator when its liquid and cold.

EVAPOURATOR

At this component or part the ref gas is back to its normal state and its oold and this is where the process of reverse carnot takes place- from hot state from compressor to cold state in the evapourator, the evapourates turns cold and forms low temperatures from on its walls through evapouration and hence absorbs warm air hence air travels from warm psoition to cold position by properties as warm air is absorbed and from here it travels back to the compressor and the cycle repeats.

FANS

The fridge freezers comprise of either two fans or one fan. the evapourator fan and the compressor cooling fan the evapourator fan hepls to circulate cool air from the evapourator/freezer point to the fridge compartment to introdcue cold air. The compressor fan helps to cool down the compressor during the process of pumping as it gets hot. its controlled by the thermal start connected to either the compressor or condensor.

FRIDGE SENSORS AND

CONTROLLERS

RELAY

The relay is connected to the nuetral point and its the one responsble for keeping the compressor motor running once the compressor its start on the running winding it then switches of the start winding within a second and powers only the running winding and this cycle is repeated whenever the compressors comes to rest and back on after defrost or when temperature is achieved.

OVERLOAD

The over load protect is used to protect the compressor from over current and this is connected the common terminal of the compressor, when the there is over current it opens the circuit as its normally closed switch.

THERMOSTART

A thermal start is the controller of temperatures with in the fridge/freezer compartment and this is connected in series with the compressor so as to limit excess pumping of the compressor when temperatures are achieved and as well too maintain the appliance efficiency in power consumption. its usually located on the fridge compartment as it only monitors the temperatures in the fridge and switching of the compressor on and off. it can either be digital or analogue

DEFROST TIMERS

The defrost timer helps to maiantain the ice build up in the freezer compartment, its connected in series with a thermal start to monitor temperatures and once set temperatures are exceeded it sets off the compressor and turns on the evaporator heaters to do a defrost for the set period of time and after the thermal start in the fridge will set back on the compressor and the cycle continues and this happens repeatedly in the operating life cycle of the fridge/freezer

ntc

these are temperature monitors used to monitor fridge freezer temperatures and work in series with the thermostats, they can be used as temperature controllers.

COOMON FRIDGE FREEZER FAULTS

Fridge/freezer may fail to work as it supposed instead of cooling and it will warm products because of various faults

FAULTY COMPRESSOR

FRIDGE RUNNNING BUT NOT COOLING? what happens when compressor is fault? When a compressor is fault there will be no refrigerant/gas pumped through out the system and hence the fridge will not work hence this can be checked by qualified technician, this can be due to faulty compressor motor, or electrical internal issues and sometimes the compressor can start vibrating or making noise.

FAULT THERMOSTART

What happens when the thermal start is fault? When the thermostart is fault the fridge/freezer will not be able to control the temperatures in the fridge/freezer compartments and this can either cause ICE to build up in compartments or fail to start the compressor and can make the fridge/freezer to fail. its can be checked by qualified technician/Faultfree Engineers.

RELAY FAILURES.

FRIDGE/FREEZER NOT TURNING ON? When start relay fails the compressor will not start instead it will stay humming and the compressor will get hot.

FANS

FREEZER COLD BUT FRIDGE IS WARM? When fans fail the fridge compartment will not be able to achieve temperatures and instead the fridge compartment will be warm and freezer cold due to lack of air circulation with in the appliance. The fan will not run at all or it will run making noise.or if its a compressor fan it will cause the compressor to over heat and cuts of the cycle.

LIGHTS OFF

lights are controlled by the door switch and they are supposed to come on when the door is open off when door is closed, A faulty door swict can cause the bulbs to fail or the faulty bulbs.

rEED SWITCH

The reed switches are connected in series with the compressor and when the reed switch fail can cause the fridge not to turn on, the lights and display board will be working but compressor will not run. these are common controls in wine coolers and chillers

lEAKAGE

Fridge/freezer is running but not cooling? This can be caused by leakage somewhere in the system and this can cause the gas to escape, a thorough check needs to be done to asses this using visual inspection method or leakage detector. This happens sometimes at the joints in the system capillary to evaporator, Filter drier to capillary name it.

BLOCKAGE

Fridge/freezer is running but not cooling? The appliance will run for a short cycle and stop, this can be due to blockage in the system caused by ware in the system or fallen object sucked into the system from leaking points, this can cause blockage especially in the capillary tube or can cause compressor oil to go off due to contamination and the compressor will seize.
